What we do
The GSN is an integral and robust part of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria set up with the following Mission and Focus to propel Glaucoma care in Nigeria to the optimal levels.
Mission
- To promote knowledge acquisition and exchange among ophthalmologists with a special interest in glaucoma; so that glaucoma patients in Nigeria receive excellent care
- To support glaucoma specialist in training, teaching, and research
- To promote awareness and enhance glaucoma patients’ associations
Subspeciality Activities
The Glaucoma Society of Nigeria organises two major activities every year (aside from being part of other international glaucoma association and Glaucoma-NET meetings that run monthly)
- Glaucoma subspecialty programme designed mainly as hands on training for members of the society and other ophthalmologists interested in honing their skills in glaucoma management. This meeting usually takes place between January and February of every year.
- The subspecialty day of the OSN takes place during the annual general meeting and scientific conference of the OSN and GSN uses the opportunity to train her members/other ophthalmologists on relevant topics of discussion.
Collective Goals And Work Plan of The Glaucoma Society of Nigeria.
- Service provision – Provision of free services to the less privileged on special occasions and celebrated days/week e.g. World Sight Day (WSD), World Glaucoma Week (WGW).
- Research – Promote and encourage innovative and collaborative research in glaucoma
- Glaucoma patients’ forum – Enhance existing and develop new glaucoma patients’ associations

- Finances and treasury – Ensure accountability and promote financial sustainability
- Information and communication – Effective and prompt dissemination of appropriate information to members and to the public.

Fatima who currently chairs the Glaucoma Society of Nigeria (GSN) is a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. She enhanced her public health research skills through an MSc and PhD with distinction at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Fatima chose very early on to focus on glaucoma. As a clinician with medical and surgical expertise as well as sub-speciality skills in Glaucoma, Fatima applies her skills to make informed, patient-centred decisions including using evidence-based interventions at a grass roots level to design the strategies required from the individual patient level to national strategic level to global networks. Her design was to start with optimising clinical patient care, working as the clinical glaucoma lead in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, then collaborate with partners to develop community-based screening and case-finding for glaucoma. The next level was to drive the production of national guidelines.
She leads the glaucoma clinical and research network (Glaucoma-NET), domiciled at the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) at LSHTM but supporting glaucoma care services in low- and middle-income countries. Fatima, in her wider leadership role, supports research in multiple areas, as Director of the University’s Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT). She is a member of the senior leadership team at the ICEH, LSHTM.
In a voluntary role, she is the West Africa (Anglophone) sub regional Co-Chair of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) www.iapb.org; and a member of the IAPB Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee, participating in high level advocacy, influencing eye health policy and planning, globally.

Dr Olusola Olawoye is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the College of
Medicine University of Ibadan Nigeria. She is a Fellow of the West African
College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College
(Ophthalmology). She has a Fellowship in Glaucoma from the New York Eye and
Ear Infirmary in Manhattan New York United States. She also has a MSc
(Epidemiology and Medical Statistics), PhD in Epidemiology from the University
of Ibadan and a PhD in Medicine from the Queens University Belfast United
Kingdom
She has authored over 70 peer-reviewed papers. She is a speaker at many
international and national conferences. She is currently the Secretary-General of
the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, Vice Chairman of both the Glaucoma
Society of Nigeria and the Pan African Glaucoma Association. She represents
Africa on the Council of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and the
Education Committee of the WGA. She is the deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory
Committee (DCMAC) at the University College Hospital. She is also the Head of
Glaucoma Services at the Department of Ophthalmology University of Ibadan.
She is an investigator on multiple grants. Dr Olawoye has a passion for impactful
research, training of younger colleagues and continuous medical education. She
has led collaborative research across SSA. Her research interest is in genetics,
glaucoma diagnosis and screening and improving equitable access to glaucoma
care in Sub-Saharan Africa

Prof. Elizabeth Awoyesuku is a Professor of Ophthalmology with the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
She is a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, Fellow International College of Surgeons and also has a fellowship in Glaucoma from the prestigious LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India.
She has authored over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been a speaker in many local and international conferences.
She is the current secretary of the Glaucoma Society of Nigeria and the Pan African Glaucoma Association.
She has a passion for continuous medical education and her research interest is in improving services for glaucoma care in Nigeria.

Professor Bola Adekoya holds Fellowships in Ophthalmology from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), and a Masters degree (with Distinction) in Public Eye Health from the University of London and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is a recipient of the Boulter (UK) and Commonwealth grants. Her research areas include general ophthalmology, glaucoma epidemiology, medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma, and blindness prevention strategies.
She is currently works as an Ophthalmologist with special interest in Glaucoma at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital /College of Medicine, Ikeja, Lagos. She is the current Financial Secretary of the Glaucoma Society of Nigeria.

Prof. Chimdia Ezioma. Ogbonnaya is a Professor of Ophthalmology with the Department of Ophthalmology, Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Abakaliki and a consultant Ophthalmologist with Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. (AEFUTHA).
She is a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College in Ophthalmology (FMCOphth), a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), a fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and a glaucoma specialist with a Fellowship in Glaucoma Services (FIGS) from the Aravind Eye Hospital and Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, India. She has published several articles in both local and international peer- reviewed journals.
Prof Chimdia Ogbonnaya is a medical teacher with Ebonyi State University and currently the head of department of Ophthalmology. She has built capacity in the area of medical education, disease control for the majority of blinding eye diseases, with special passion for glaucoma and cataract. For this she has been involved in several medical and surgical outreaches to various communities in the south east and has been involved in setting up eye centres for both mission, government and private establishments.
She is the current treasurer of the Glaucoma Society of Nigeria.

Dr Adedeji Olawunmi Akinyemi is a Chief Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of Glaucoma Unit, Department of Ophthalmology, Federal Medical Centre, Asaba , Delta State.
He is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria, Faculty of Ophthalmology. He has a Certificate in Project Management in Global Health (University of Washington). He also has a Certificate in Glaucoma Sub specialty from Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India.
He has authored many articles in peer reviewed journals. He is a speaker/presenter in many local and international conferences.
He is currently the Publicity Secretary of the Glaucoma Society of Nigeria.
He is biased towards effective and efficient modalities of managing blindness from Glaucoma in Nigeria in conjunction with other major causes of blindness especially at the rural setting level. He is also interested in researches in the genetics of Glaucoma especially in Sub Saharan Africa. He is an astute teacher and educational instructor.

Prof. Adeola Onakoya is a Professor of Ophthalmology with the College of Medicine, University of Lagos and a Consultant Ophthalmologist with Lagos University Teaching Hospital. She is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons and also a Fellow of the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). She has M.D (Doctor of Medicine) with the NPMCN. She is committed to early detection and diagnosis of glaucoma in high risk individuals and to reducing the incidence of glaucoma related blindness.
She specializes in the management of all aspect of Glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. She also has expertise in diagnosis of neuro-ophthalmology disorders. Her major research interest includes the role of Systemic Blood Pressure and genetics in the disease process of Glaucoma.
She is an examiner at NPMCN and WACS in Faculty of Ophthalmology. At different times, she served as: Faculty Secretary of Ophthalmology of NPMCN; Secretary General of Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria; Member ICO Advisory Leadership Group for Sub Saharan Africa; MEACO Representative at ICO Global Assembly. Dr Onakoya is the immediate past Head of Department of Ophthalmology, Lagos University Teaching Hospital/College of Medicine University of Lagos; Immediate Past Chair, Faculty of Ophthalmology, NPMCN; Immediate Past Chair, Glaucoma Society of Nigeria. She has over 90 publications in peer reviewed journals, and had supervised over 70 Dissertations.
